It’s sad when you put so much effort into something and do not see any results! Maybe you are going through the same thing that’s why you landed here, hopefully by the end of this post, you will have a clear understanding of how to start monetizing your blog ASAP!
Can You Monetize A Blog From Day One?
The answer is yes but does that mean you will have cash in your hands from day one? Absolutely not! Monetizing a blog from day one simply means setting the framework to make money later on. Without the proper blog monetization strategies, a blog can never make money! It’s that simple.
It is said that over 81% of blogs never make more than $100 dollars after years of creating content and I think that this is really sad. I don’t want this to be you! I really want you to succeed in blogging and actually make money doing something you love.
How To Monetize Your Blog From Day One
To monetize your blog from day one, you need to have a monetization framework which is setting up your blog with your end game in mind. With the blog monetization framework, you have 3 main goals, build backlinks, get their emails and make a sale. None of these goals will happen without valuable content though.
Also, you need a relevant product that helps your reader solve a problem. The product has to be related to your blog niche and has to have a high affiliate commission or profit. The equation is valuable content + valuable product. Follow the steps below to start monetizing your blog!
Step 1. Choose A Niche
A niche is a sub-topic of a broad topic. Your first step into creating a successful blog is to have a niche. Choosing a broad niche will limit your exposure. To choose a niche, start with a category>topic>sub-topic: Example: Weight loss>belly fat loss>lose belly fat for women>on a budget:
By choosing a specific niche, you have a specific audience to market to. This ensures a clear voice for your brand and keeps you focused on providing quality information to a loyal audience. Niche blogs are also ranked easily in search engines which = lower competition & traffic.
Once you choose a niche, you need to define your niche>who is your audience>what is their problem>how can you help them solve their problem. So women on a budget>belly fat>help them lose it with belly fat-burning foods. Now you can create a winning blog and content strategy.
Step 2. Outline Your Blog’s Homepage Structure
Your next step is to outline your blog structure. If your aim is to make money with your blog, you need to have a dedicated homepage that contains a lead magnet, a list of your courses, and links to your most important posts. Your homepage has to be a landing page with a funnel. It should guide the viewer into taking action.
A money-making blog homepage structure contains a value statement>leadmagnet>your experience>testimonials>best content (money posts or courses)>Your latest posts.
A value statement is a clear short sentence of what your blog is about. Your lead magnet or opt-in is a signup form that is usually connected to or below your value statement. Your experience should explain why they should listen to you.
Testimonials or a “featured on” are great for gaining your viewer’s trust. Your best content should be your money posts, freebies or your courses, and lastly, a box of at least 3 of your latest posts. See below:
Step 3. Have A Content Strategy
To make money with your blog, you need to have a solid monetization content strategy. You don’t want to write content simply for the sake of writing. Yes, you need to have content on your blog to bring people in initially but I recommend spending most of your time creating content that will generate income for you.
This is where affiliate marketing comes into play. Make a list of all the tools and products that can benefit your audience, these tools and products must be relevant but overall, helpful.
Step 4. Create Product Reviews
One of the best ways to monetize a new blog is through affiliate marketing and to promote affiliate products successfully, you will need to create product reviews. Now in most cases, as a new blogger, you just don’t have enough experience with products in your niche to create reviews.
It’s okay if you are using amazon associates for affiliate products, try promoting products with 4-5 star reviews. If you are using sites like Digistore24, Clickbank or Shareasale, also promote products with high gravity, reviews, or search google to see what others are saying before promoting a product.
Create review posts with your affiliate links for each of these tools and products. Next, create your resource page and make a list post of each product and link to your reviews. For the belly fat loss niche a resource page would be something like this:
Note, that your resource page can consist of your own products and tools. Adding free tools in the mixture that are helpful is also a great strategy to create trust. Your next step is to create your money posts and pillar posts to further maximize your results.
Step 5. Create Money Posts
Money posts are posts that you create specifically to make sales. They are usually written in a strategic order with buyer intent. When people want to buy something, they usually search using keywords like “best” “top” “review” “vs” or “how to”.
Using these terms shows that a person is in buyer mode but wants to choose the best option or quality possible. When creating money posts, you must remember to keep your posts relevant to your niche. So if your niche is about losing belly fat, you can write about the 10 best belly fat burners for people on a budget.
Spend time creating at least 5 great money posts using titles with buyer intent. Try to aim for at least 2000-3000 word articles for each of your money posts. Make sure to add in the pros and cons of each product and give them a solid, well-researched recommendation at the end of each post.
Your money posts should link back to each individual product review. Your money post should be featured on your blog’s homepage as well with a bold image, title, and description. it should be shared, promoted, and linked to in all relevant future blog posts as well.
Step 6. Write Pillar Posts
Pillar posts are very important when it comes to driving free search engine traffic to your blog. You need the traffic to make sales. Pillar posts are posts that are over 2000 words long and they usually cover short tail keywords like lose belly fat or belly fat loss.
A pillar post must cover almost every question there is surrounding a specific topic and needs to link back to in-depth articles on those questions. These links should be 50% yours and 50% other well-known high DA (domain authority) blogs in your niche.
A pillar post is similar to a list post but only with each question, there are one to two paragraphs to answer that question and then a link to go in-depth. Your pillar posts should contain a relevant opt-in, and links to your money post. Here is a great article on how to create pillar posts.
I highly recommend that your pillar posts answer your reader’s questions, get them into your funnel, or help you make a sale. I also recommend you create at least 5 well-written pillar posts that cover 5 of the main categories on your blog.
Step 7. Build Backlinks For More Traffic
To make money blogging, you need traffic, to get free traffic, you need a high domain authority score. It takes years of high-quality content to grow your domain authority score, therefore, you need to guest post. Guest posting is when you write and post articles relevant to your niche on other blogs with high domain authority.
When you create articles for high authority sites, you are allowed to add links back to your site within the articles. These links pass on link juice and increase your domain score as well. These links are known as backlinks, the more relevant, high-quality backlinks you have pointing to your blog, the higher your posts appear in search engines.
Generally, you want to look at blogs with domain authority scores of over 50 and a spam score of under 3%. Your first step is to find blogs in your niche that are accepting guest posts. Next, you need to find their contact information and email them with your guest post proposal. Use the template below for outreach:
Try sending out as many emails to all the blogs on your list using the template above and wait for their replies. Note that not all of them will reply to you right away, therefore, you need to follow up with them. When you do get responses, it’s time to craft a pitch with topic relevancy.
There are 4 things to keep in mind when pitching your topics, they must be relevant to the blog’s audience, you need to have knowledge around the topic, your topic does not already exist on their site, lastly, the topic must have SEO value to the sites existing content.
Before you pitch your topic, search to see if it already exists on the site by using the following string: site:blogname.com your topic”
To find topics that provide SEO value to the blog you are pitching to, simply scan through their pillar content to see if there are any keywords and content that need adding. lastly, always make sure to check the site’s content guidelines.
Step 8. Create Digital Freebies
A freebie is a free digital item that you can give away in return for email subscribers to grow your email list. More on building an email list below. A freebie can be a pdf, a planner, a journal, a guide, or anything your audience can easily access or download upon entering their email address.
Your freebie should be relevant to your blog niche and should give a hint as to what your audience should expect from you in the future. It should also be good enough to get your audience to want to buy your future product.
But most importantly, it should be really helpful to your audience and provide a solution to their problems and earn their trust. To get ideas for creating freebies, simply search your niche plus “freebie” and click on images on Google.
You can also search for other blogs in your niche and get ideas of what they are using as lead magnets to grow their lists. You can use Canva to create amazing freebies for free. Here is a list of freebies to choose from:
Step 9. Grow Your Email List
If you intend to make money with your blog forever, you need to grow, nourish and maintain an email list. Now I am not an email marketing expert and I have definitely had my share of email marketing fails but I know this, not having an email list will leave you constantly in search of traffic and sales!
Having an email list is like having an audience that is always ready to devour your content! They are yours if your Pinterest or Google traffic fails, you will always have your list to market your products to and bring traffic back to your blog. Not having a niche targeted email list is like leaving money on the table.
Notice I said, “niche targeted”? This simply means that you need to capture your audience using a freebie that is relevant to your niche! You also need to keep your list updated daily or weekly with helpful tips and tricks so that they don’t forget who you are. Nurturing your email list regularly will make it so much easier to monetize.
Step 10. Create Digital Products
Your ultimate goal as a blogger who intends to make money is to create your own digital product. This may sound very scary, but it really isn’t! Creating a digital product that serves your audience and helps them solve a problem is a very successful way to take your blog to six figures.
Before you even decide on creating a product, you must understand your audience and why they are coming to your blog in the first place. Once you have a clear idea of your audience’s pain, you can provide solutions with a product. You can create and sell digital products like:
Do You Have To Own A Product?
Absolutely not but highly recommended. I don’t own any products and I make money from my blog! I promote Bluehost hosting plans because my blog is about blogging. One pro tip is to always promote products that you trust, test, or honestly believe will help your readers.
You never want to promote products simply because of the commissions, you want to build trust and provide help. If your readers feel like you are all about the money, they won’t trust you and will definitely not purchase your recommendations.
Finding Affiliate Products In Your Niche
In the beginning, I highly recommend you promote products that are relevant to your niche and are from reputable and trustworthy sources like Amazon or Shareasale. You can also look for brands like Target, or Macy’s that have affiliate programs.
Sites like Amazon, Clickbank, Shareasale, & Digistore 24 offer affiliate programs for bloggers and affiliate marketers. I recommend you sign up for all four of them and try to find products with high commissions to promote.
I also recommend that you choose products with 4-5 stars reviews because people rely on reviews to make purchases.
