How to Drive Traffic to Your Blog with Pinterest
Whatever your niche, there is an audience for you on Pinterest, now when you have just started your awesome new blog with all this amazing content that is just sitting there with no eyes on it, you are gonna be tempted to go and try out every traffic method on the planet just because some YouTube video told you to but DON’T!
Take it from a gal who has read thousands of blogs and watched countless YouTube videos with close to 11 different blogs under her sleeves and years of blogging experience, you don’t want to be all over the place when you are just starting out.
You need to pick a platform, one single platform for traffic generation and try your Damn best to make it work before even contemplating the idea of moving on to another traffic source.
Yes I know this may be against everything the gurus told you but just hear me out. I am not trying to sell you anything here, just to show you exactly what has been working for me so read on.
Focusing on multiple sources will leave you with way less time to master a single traffic source, numerous studies shows that if you spend 10.000 hours on a single task, platform or skill, you become a master of it
10.000 hours is roughly about 417 days which is a little over a year, yeah I know, you are not gonna be spending every waking hour on one thing in particular so you need at least 2 years to master the platform. I have spent those hours, done the research and learnt a lot along the way so I can honestly tell you that Pinterest is the best thing that could ever happen to your blog and business when you don’t have the money to spend on ads.
Most Popular Niches On Pinterest
To find the most popular niches on pinterest, you can read this post on the 27 most popular niches on pinterest which will help you decide upon your niche before building your blog or business. These niches may be popular but you must also take into consideration that most popular niches will be highly competitive as well.
Now don’t be scared of a little competition, there are roughly 200 million pinterest accounts on pinterest but only a handful of them are actually optimized for pinterest search therefore this post will help you get ahead of the pack dramatically.
I currently have over 10 pinterest accounts in competitive niches and I am ranking very high for almost all of them. See for yourself, I am ranking #1 for the keyword leopard print, #2 for health, nutrition & fitness, (22 mil followers) #1 for makeup tools, (400k followers) #4 for street styles, (18.5 mil followers) #1 for casual outfits, (30 mil followers) and many others.
Optimize Your Pinterest Profile And Boards
Now let me be completely honest with you, optimizing your pinterest profile and boards will help your profile rank for your keywords on pinterest. Though it is vital for long term traffic generation and helps you become an authority in your niche, it has little to do with driving traffic to your blog or business right away.
You see the fact of the matter is pinterest takes up to 5 days to actually index and rank your post for your keywords and sometimes even longer, I have ranked pins on pinterest that did not lead to a blog, were not rich pins, did not have alt text and were not even in my niche.
That said, for the purpose of best practices, I do recommend that you take the time to optimize your pinterest profile and you can watch the video below which will show you how to do it correctly.
Create Board Covers
Now this step is not really necessary when optimizing your pinterest profile but it works well by setting you apart from everyone else, with billions of images on pinterest, getting your board cover images to stand out can sometimes be difficult.
This is why I recommend you use custom-made images for your board covers, don’t worry, you can easily get this done using a free site called canva. Creating images has never been easier, just sign up for a free account if you don’t have one already and use these dimensions to create your covers.
220 x 150 pixels, 217 x 147 pixels, 225 x 155 pixels are the best dimensions for creating board covers in Canva for your pinterest profile. I use sites like pixabay and pixlr to find and use copyright free images for my projects and you should too.
Researching Your Keywords For Your Blog Post
The very first thing you want to do before creating a blog post is to do your research, you need to find longtail keywords that people are actually searching for on pinterest. The easiest way to find longtail keywords on pinterest is by using the pinterest search box.
For this blog post, I typed in “drive traffic” into pinterest search bar and it came up with other phrases that people are searching for like drive traffic to your blog, drive traffic to your website, drive traffic to your store and so on.
So I chose “how to drive traffic to your blog” now with these keywords, I am actually targeting two sets which I will show up for if people searched for “how to get drive traffic to your blog” and “drive traffic to your blog” so you see how it works?
The second method is by using the pinterest guided search bar, so lets search for “drive traffic” again and see whats gonna show up:
Now to use the guided search bar, you need to start clicking on keywords from right to left, this is how pinterest works, the keywords on the right are the most searched for terms along with your initial keywords. Now your job is to find the ones that would make sense when put into a sentence so lets say we wanted to use “online business”.
Your keywords would be “drive traffic to your online business” for search engine would be “drive traffic to your blog using search engines”. This is just an example of how to use the guided search bar but get used to it cause it will become your new best friend.
Images That Will Drive Traffic To Your Blog
As you might know by now, pinterest is a visual search engine with billions of images and millions more being uploaded each and every single day. Your awesome images can easily get lost in and buried in it all that is why you need to master the art of creating high quality, eye catchy images if you want to get a taste of the full potential of pinterest.
Lets face it, when you are on pinterest looking for inspiration, you only pin the most beautiful images right? This is how you want to look at you images, from a pinner’s perspective when creating your own pins. Would you repin it? Ask yourself that the next time you are creating an image for your blog post.
Another important factor you need to consider is your audience, who are your target audience and how do they perceive images? Some people love bright and flashy images with modern fonts while others like simplicity, how can you determine what your audience is into?
Search for your keywords that you are targeting for your blog post on pinterest, for example: your post is about “diet plans” search for it and take a look at the first 10 images/pins, those are the most repinned and liked pins on pinterest for your keyword.
Use those images as an inspiration to create your own. Next you want to find the sizes for your images, you can do this right clicking on any pin and selecting inspect, once it opens up, wait a few seconds until a blue color covers up the piece of text under the image.
Now locate where it says jpg or png within the blue text and hover over it with your mouse, it will bring out a mini version of the image and underneath it, will be the dimension/size of the image. Watch this canva tutorial to help you create images faster for pinterest.
Alt Text And Description
Now that we have covered the types of images you need to use on pinterest, it is time for the most important part, alt text and pin descriptions. Pinterest is a search engine and search engines use meta tags and alt text to find relevant results to show for certain search terms.
By adding keyword rich alt text and descriptions to your images, you increase the chances of your pins getting found in pinterest search results by 99% especially if your blog is verified and you have rich pins enabled. Watch the video below to learn how to add alt text and descriptions to your images the right way.
After everything that we have covered so far, group boards are and will always be, the best way to start driving traffic as fast as possible to your blog post. That said, you must understand that joining random group boards will have the opposite effect on your overall pinterest profile and you don’t want that.
For group boards to work for you, you need to join the ones that are in your niche, I see people pinning cute cats to healthy eating group boards all the time and they simply get deleted by the moderators of the board. Don’t be that person!
To find group boards that are in your niche, you can use a free site called Pingroupie, simply choose your category, sort it by followers and hit search, this will bring up a bunch of results for all the group boards in that category.
By clicking on the name of a board from the list, you will be taken to the itself, you want to open as many of the boards and find the ones that contain email addresses. Watch the video below to see how I find and join group boards.
Using great images that are readable, contain alt text and descriptions are what will make your pins get found on pinterest but using keywords that people are actually searching for, is what will drive traffic to your blog post. Rich pins are extremely important as well as optimizing your pinterest profile for pinterest search but groups boards are definitely the key to start driving traffic as fast as possible.
So this is how to drive traffic to your blog using pinterest the right way, follow these methods consistently and you will be well on your way to driving tons of traffic to your blog or website 100% free.
